Benfica midfielder Gianluca Prestianni has firmly denied allegations that he racially insulted Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior during their recent UEFA Champions League tie. The incident occurred after the Argentine, 20, appeared to cover his mouth with his shirt and exchange words with Vinícius on the pitch.

Prestianni took to social media, insisting he “has never been racist with anyone” and expressing regret over the online threats he received from Real Madrid players following the match. If found guilty under UEFA’s disciplinary rules, he could face up to a 10-match suspension.

UEFA has appointed a special investigator to look into the matter as part of its anti-discrimination procedures. The game was temporarily halted for nearly 10 minutes when referee Francois Letexier activated the protocol after Vinícius reported the alleged abuse.

Both clubs have responded publicly: Benfica described Prestianni as the target of a “defamation campaign,” while acknowledging UEFA’s inquiry, and Real Madrid’s squad expressed strong support for Vinícius. Videos circulating online also suggested some fans in the stands made offensive gestures towards the Brazilian forward.

UEFA’s investigation is ongoing ahead of the second leg of the tie, which Real Madrid will host on Feb. 25, with a place in the Round of 16 at stake.
